The distance between an eSIM standard existing and an eSIM standard being usable is where a lot of IoT projects quietly stall. Kigen has just put something in that gap. Its new IoT eSIM Starter Kit, recently reported on IoT Portal, gives manufacturers, OEMs, ODMs, embedded developers and enterprise teams a way to test SGP.32 activation and remote provisioning before committing a product line to it.

Here is a summary of what Kigen say, and why it matters for anyone tracking the SGP.32 standard rather than just admiring the specification.

What Kigen is putting in the box

The kit pulls the moving parts of an SGP.32 deployment into a single environment for evaluation:

  • 10 eSA-certified Kigen eSIMs
  • Three months of access to the SAS-certified Kigen eIM and Kigen Pulse
  • Device-side tooling, including the Kigen C-SDK and IPAd
  • Activation-ready profiles from 13 connectivity partners: 1oT, floLIVE, Hologram, iBASIS, KDDI America, KORE, NuvoLinQ, Onomondo, Pangea Connected, Semtech, Skylo Technologies, Soracom and Zariot

The offer is a three-month window to test the things that actually decide whether a fleet survives contact with the real world: profile downloads, activation flows, exception handling, remote lifecycle operations and how devices behave when the network changes underneath them.

Why it matters for SGP.32

SGP.32 was written to make connectivity for constrained, unattended and remotely deployed devices less painful to manage. What it does not do is the integration work. The standard is a document, not a product, and the interesting part has always been the operating model built around it – the eIM, the profiles, the exception handling, and the ability to swap providers without redesigning hardware or rebuilding the management stack.

That is the part Kigen is aiming at. The company says it is not prescribing which connectivity provider a business must use; the kit is built around bringing your own operator and expanding options later, which is precisely the multi-operator orchestration story SGP.32 was supposed to enable. Hundreds of additional operator profiles have already been tested for download and can be sourced separately.

Built on trials, not slideware

Kigen is leaning on more than 18 months of eIM trials and over 100 customer journeys toward commercial products, with names including Digi International, Evergy, floLIVE, Itron, NuvoLinQ and Robustel already attached to its SGP.32 work across utilities, payment terminals, tracking, wearables and industrial systems. On that evidence, the kit is shaped less around the first successful profile download and more around what happens after devices ship, which is usually where the awkward questions start.

None of this makes SGP.32 automatic. It does, however, move it from specification to something you can put on a bench and break on purpose before you break it in the field.
