Who 1GLOBAL actually is

1GLOBAL is a UK-headquartered eSIM and connectivity company that absorbed Truphone in 2025 and has invested over half a billion pounds building a single global core network. It is a full MVNO in a handful of countries, a licensed operator in more than forty, and reaches 190+ countries through partnerships, carrying tens of millions of connections. Where Kigen sells the silicon and Eseye sells the orchestration, 1GLOBAL sells the network itself plus the mechanism that gets a device onto it in the first place.

Leadership skews telecom-heavyweight: the chairman, Dr. Hannes Ametsreiter, ran Vodafone Germany. On the IoT and eSIM side the public-facing voice is Javier Gonzalez, its Global Head of IoT and eSIM Solutions. The customer roster leans consumer and fintech – Revolut and freenet for travel eSIM, Jazeera Airways for a white-label airline eSIM – which is worth noting, because it tells you 1GLOBAL’s centre of gravity is high-volume managed connectivity, not bespoke industrial deployment.

What 1GLOBAL brings to SGP.32

1GLOBAL’s SGP.32 product is its eSIM IoT Manager (eIM), and the thing it leads with is bootstrap. The model is clean: the OEM installs a 1GLOBAL Bootstrap eSIM profile in the factory, the device ships with a multi-IMSI connection valid almost anywhere in the world, and on first power-up the IPA syncs and pulls down the optimal local profile over the air. The pitch is genuinely attractive – a single global SKU, zero-touch activation, no truck roll, a device that boots up connected in Brazil and localises itself without anyone touching it.

The engineering is legitimate. 1GLOBAL supports both the device-side IPA-d and the eSIM-embedded IPA-e, uses CoAP over UDP for constrained NB-IoT and LTE-M devices alongside HTTPS, and exposes the whole thing through a single portal and API. Its materials still cite SGP.32 v1.1, slightly behind the v1.2 certification baseline and the v1.3 update published in May 2026, which is a small dated detail worth checking rather than a red flag. And, to its credit, it is explicit that after bootstrap you keep the freedom to decide who operates the profiles, when and where.

The story behind the facts

What makes 1GLOBAL the subtle case in this series is that it is not hiding anything. It calls the embedded bootstrap its advantage, out loud, in its own marketing. There is no sleight of hand to expose. The lock is simply the flip side of the convenience, and both are real at the same time.

Walk the mechanism through. Because the bootstrap is loaded at manufacture, it is a design-time decision with the same permanence as the OS choice – you cannot cheaply re-bootstrap a fleet already in the field. Because every device phones home to 1GLOBAL’s bootstrap first, 1GLOBAL brokers the first connection and delivers the first operational profile. And because the whole value proposition is “it just works from the box,” the path of least resistance is to keep letting 1GLOBAL broker everything. The switching freedom SGP.32 grants is real, but it is a freedom most fleets will never exercise, because exercising it means giving up the exact convenience they bought.

The bootstrap lock is the quietest of the three. It doesn’t trap you by making switching hard – it traps you by making staying effortless.

That is a different flavour of lock-in from Eseye’s or Kigen’s, and arguably the most honest, precisely because 1GLOBAL never pretends the bootstrap is neutral. It is the front door to the device, it is theirs, and it is fixed at the factory. A buyer who understands that is buying with eyes open. A buyer who hears only “single SKU, zero-touch, ships connected” is buying a dependency they haven’t priced.

Set against the others, this completes the picture of conservation of lock-in. Kigen’s eUICC OS is the deepest and most permanent lock. Eseye’s orchestration layer is the escapable-but-painful one. 1GLOBAL’s bootstrap sits between them: harder to move than an orchestrator because it is set at manufacture, softer than the OS because the eUICC can hold other profiles and can, in principle, be re-provisioned. Its distinguishing feature is not depth but disguise – it is the layer most easily mistaken for a free gift.

  • Price the convenience. Single-SKU zero-touch is worth real money – just make sure you know what the ongoing dependency on 1GLOBAL’s core network and bootstrap is worth to them too.
